Here's a few questions for you:
- When was the last time you saw a steel-framed stage inside?
- Or have you ever worn flip-flops to church?
- How about the last time your worship band rocked out with an electric guitar and a full drumkit?
We are not your traditional church, even though we stick to traditional values. Showing up for service is a
little like showing up for a mid-summer BBQ ... but with childcare! People show up early so they can hang out, grab
a snack, drop the kids off at Kid City and send the teens up to the Paradigm Loft.
As the music starts we meander over to
the chairs and put our things down so we can clap along while the electric guitarist throws down a guitar riff and the drummer starts
to lay down the beat. We enjoy the music by clapping and singing along with the words on the projector screen.
After the music, announcements, and
giving (which guests should ignore), the pastor will climb up on the stage and deliver a message interspersed with
stories about his animal farm, jokes he got from email, and a few other entertaining detours.
And although his message is entertaining, it's also real, practical, and timely. And it is truth coming straight from God's word.
People
pull out their pencils to fill in the blanks in the crib sheet they found in the bulletin on their seat, and a few people get up to borrow a bible from the
back of the room so they can follow along as the pastor refers to relevant scriptures. And still other people might be taking
notes in their Missionals In Training booklet that they brought to use in MIT earlier that morning.
And you'd be right.
